3 Tips For Improved Handling Of Your Dog

There have been many different schools of thought when it comes to dog training. It will take a lot of dedication and patience when teaching your dog new tricks and handling their obedience training. You will not only have to be aware of your dog's actions but your own training practices and your own body language as well. Here you will find three tips that you can use and will assist you in the training and handling of your pets.

1. You should use one hand and arm only when giving signals to your dog. Do not use excessive body motion when giving your signals but be sure they are always done smoothly and swiftly. You may exaggerate your signals in the early stages of the training to make sure that you have gained your dogs attention. You do not have to worry about the size of your dog being a factor. You will have to train your dog to pay attention and he will see your signals if he is paying attention.

There are people who will disagree with this practice. They have not yet learned how to make their dogs give and pay attention to them. You will have to monitoring yourself that you do not give unintentional body signals to your dog. You will become so intent on watching your dog that you will be totally unaware of your own actions. If you are a beginner it will be natural for you to be leaning forward or to be moving your hands when you call your dog and also be nodding your head. To avoid these pitfalls you can have someone watching you while training your dog so when they notice that you are making these mistakes that they can make you aware of them.

2. You will have to be consistent. You can not be praising your dog one day and be scolding him the next day for some misdemeanor action he performed. You will have to stay very consistent in your training methods. If you keep changing your training methods as you go you can not expect your dog to understand an exercise. Your whole training program will have to be consistent and will have to proceed smoothly. Your dog learns by repetition and you can not be giving him mixed signals. You will be building off of the techniques that you use in puppy training. They will be repeated in advanced exercises when your dog gets older so your handling will have to be just the same.

3. You should know and study your dog. You will want to foresee his reaction in whatever situation that may arise. If your dog has certain sensitivities then you want to be aware of them. If you have a dog that is strong willed and aggressive it will not work to be gentle and quiet in your training with him. You will have to be stern and forceful with him. You will have to tone down your training on a dog with a gentle and calm manner. If you are considerate of his feelings in your approach in training him they will be very alert and responsive to you.
