4 Tips to Alleviate Your Dogs Destructive Household Behavior

I am sure you have experienced first hand how destructive your dog or puppy can be around the house. They will knock items over and bite and chew what ever they can get away with. Even when they know that they are not supposed to you will find that a well trained and properly taught dog will have a hard time resisting chewing on household items. As a dog owner you know first hand how destructive and expensive this can be.

You will find that most of the behavioral problems that you might have with your dogs are actually quite normal patterns. The problem is that they are not appropriate and acceptable for the environment and setting that they are in.

It is perfectly normal for a dog to be chewing things up or knocking things over when you have valuable items in the same area that your dog will be residing. We have good news for you. Dogs are quick learners and if you apply some basic simple training tips to your dog you will have your dog focusing his chewing energy somewhere else.

1. You will always want to have plenty of toys available for your dog. This does not matter if your dog is an adult of a puppy. If you have plenty of items for them to chew on and play with they will tend to focus their energy on their own toys and chew items instead of your items. You will want to make sure that these items are readily available for them.

2. You do not want to give your dog any items that are actually items that belong to you. It might seem quite innocent but think about it for a moment, we give our dog our tennis shoe to chew on and now we have just given our dog our permission to chew up and destroy one of our items. Do you think your dog will be able to tell the difference from that shoe and your other personal belongings in your house? He will not be able to distinguish between his toys and chews that you have given him and your personal items that you share with him. You are confusing him and he will not have an idea of what you expect from him.

3. You will want to immediately stop any unwanted chewing behavior. Do not under any circumstances let an instance pass by that you let your dog chew up something he shouldn't have. In the future it will be that much harder to combat the his disobedience if you let him get away with this misbehavior .

4. You will want to create separate space for your dog or puppy. It can be a room or a pen or even a simple crate will suffice. This will be where you will send your dog for discipline or when you leave the house. You do not have to worry that your house will be wreaked while you are gone and it will be an area that will be his own.
