You can't teach an old dog new tricks, but you can teach him to recall stuff he learned. It's like riding a bike. Once you know how to do it and even though you haven't ridden for a long time, the minute you ride one, you still know how. 1. Start with the name. Sometimes when a dog has reached five or six years old, he becomes lazy whenever you call him. If your dog comes to you the minute you beckon, then you're still lucky. But if it takes him a while to do so, you have to start training him in that area again. Just like when he was a puppy, you have to repeat the long process of training. Reward him by saying verbal cues such as "Good boy" or "Good girl." 2. If bowel movement becomes a problem again, take note when your dog does his business. If you can, then that's when you take him out. But there are other dog owners who prefer that their dogs adjust to their schedules and not the other way around. Crate training process still works with dogs, just as it was originally intended for with puppies. 3. As a dog gets older, he also knows how you are. He observes your actions. He knows when to take you seriously and when to just ignore you. Talk to your dog with a calm but controlled voice. Calm so he hints you are serious and controlled so he knows that you will not take no for an answer. In that way, he's most likely afraid of you. 4. A secret for your dog to maintain all these he knew from before is to always reward your dog whenever he does something good. This may not just come in form of treats. A simple "good boy" or "good girl" can already make his or her heart jump. 5. Another key word he must understand is "come." In saying this, he would retreat back to where you want him to be and not go astray. Sometimes when you take your dog out for a walk, he can go awry whenever he sees another dog. If you do not have a leash with you, verbal command can be very helpful when this scenario takes place. 6. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. It may be too tiring but in the end, it will be worth it. You will only be repeating the training process for some time. If your dog pretty much gets the idea of how he should act based on how you want him to, then that wouldn't be any problem for both you and your pet. 7. But that does not mean you would encourage a repetition in giving out commands. The repetitions should only occur during the training process. If he shows signs that he understands what you are asking him to, one verbal cue such as "Come" and "Back" should be enough for him. Another secret in re-training your dog, just show him that you're doing this for him. He may be an animal but dogs aren't man's best friends for nothing.
