Do You Know How To Communicate With Your Dog

by JK Fitterman

Before you begin a dog training program, the first you need to do is learn how to communicate with your dog. People and dogs are two different species and thus communication can be difficult. Since people are the more intelligent of the two, it is up to us to communicate in ways our dogs can understand. You must speak his language, because he cannot speak yours. Every time you do something with your dog, you must ask yourself what his canine eyes are seeing and what his canine mind understands. To understand how your dog communicates you need to learn how the world looks through his eyes, what it sounds and smells like to him. This article will give you some basic insight into these areas so that you can gain a better understanding of how to communicate with your dog.

Your dog?s vision resembles that of a nearsighted person; most objects appear fuzzy to him. And from his level, everything towers over him. Although his vision is fuzzy, he can still pick out details of your expression. He will wag his tail when you smile and drop it when you frown. Dogs never react because of guilt; they only react to your expressions and body language. When a dog acts guilty, it?s because your posture is one that has caused discomfort for him in the past. Your dog has better night vision than you and he is not completely colorblind. Dogs can see shades of yellow and blue, but not reds or greens.

Your dog relies upon his nose the same way you rely on your eyes. The same way you can pick a green ball out from a pile of red balls, he can pick out one thing from among many that was touched by his owner. He will create mental images based on smells. He can recognize the smells from places he enjoyed and he also remembers the discomfort from the vet?s office because of the smells he finds there. Your dog also recognizes and reacts to your happy vacation attitude and your nervous vet attitude. If you don?t want him to be nervous, don?t soothe him or reassure him. Act calm and totally unconcerned and he will take his cue from you.

Your dog hears much better than you. He can hear softer sounds over greater distances and at higher frequencies. Use a low pleasant voice when you talk to your dog. Studies have shown when you speak in a quiet voice dogs play closer attention. And of course, your dog doesn?t actually understand your words, not unless you link them to a particular action or object. Until you connect a word with an object or action, words are just meaningless sounds.

By beginning to understand how your dog sees the world around him, you can begin to learn how best to communicate with him. By remembering that your dog hears things differently than you, smells things you can?t comprehend and sees the world vastly differently than you will go a long ways in improving your canine communication. Keep in mind, you?re the smarter of the two and it?s up to you to make communication between you and your dog work. By learning how to communicate with your dog, you will go a long ways in insuring your dog training will be successful.
