Having Your Dog Identified Your Choices for a Safe Pet

Knowing that your dog is safe is a concern for any caring owner. There are some simple methods you can take in order to provide the safety for your dog that they deserve. The methods most commonly used are: name collar tags, tattoos, and microchips. This article will discuss these ways of identifying your dog.

Name Collar Tags

Giving your dog a collar in order to personalize her is a great idea, but it should always be accompanied by a collar tag ? something that identifies her, and who to contact in case she gets lost. Many pet stores offer engraved tags that can include a name, phone number, and address of the dog owners. This is the most common means of identifying your dog.

Tattoos

A more permanent solution to identifying your dog is an I.D. tattoo. A unique I.D. number is permanently tattooed onto you dog. The pain is nonexistent, and once tattooed you can register you dog with the American Kennel Club website. If lost, veterinarians, and/or animal shelters will be able to use the tattoo to properly find the dog?s owners.

Microchip

An electronic microchip is a growing way of keeping you dog safe. The chip itself is only about the size of a grain of rice, and no surgery or anesthesia is required. The chip is inserted under the dog?s skin. The chip includes a barcode that can be read using a hand scanner (most vets and animal shelters are equipped with such a device).

In using a permanent type of I.D. it is always best to also include a collar tag in order to draw attention to the fact that you dog is permanently I.D.?d. This not only allows for people that find you dog to return her safely, but also deters doggie thieves.

While the difference between these three I.D. methods are clear, it is most important to implement some way for you dog to be identified. Having peace of mind that your dog is protected will only add to the enjoyment of being a pet owner.
