Learning to Walk Fido

Owning a dog is more than just feeding and giving water to your pet. You also need to give your new found friend love, comfort and exercise. Taking care of your dog's nutritional needs is important, but you should also take care of his physical needs. Daily exercise is essential to help maintain your pet's health and happiness.

Exercising your dog does not have to be complicated or costly. All you need to do is give your dog the activity he needs to help keep him healthy. As any human who wants to start an exercise program should see their doctor first, you should take your dog to his veterinarian for a check up before you start exercising. Make sure he is healthy enough for exercise. While you are there ask his doctor how much exercise is good for your dog.

Walking your dog is one of the easiest things you can do to get your dog active. It requires minimal equipment and time, yet it yields results quick. You will want to buy a good collar and leash for your dog, one that fits him and will not come off easily. There are many different brands to choose from, so ask your veterinarian or local pet store for advice to find the perfect one.

As with any exercise program, start off slowly. If you dog have never been walked before start off by going a short distance. Do not work your dog too hard in the beginning. Make taking a walk fun for both of you. As he gets use to walking, increase the distance you go until you reach your goal for him.

Make sure your dog has plenty of water before, during and after the walk. Once you start taking longer walks, bring a bottle of water for your dog so he does not get dehydrated during your time outside. Most pet stores carry a portable water bottle, complete with a little dish, designed just for pets.

During the hot months consider taking smaller walks so your friend gets enough exercise. If your dog overheats, be sure to take a break from the walk and rest in some shade. Do not forget water to help him cool down. When it is really hot, tries taking your walks early in the morning, or after the sun has gone down at night. Try to only take him out when the heat is lower than 80 degrees and the humidity level is less than 30 percent.

During winter months, keep a close eye on your dog during his walk. Especially when there is snow on the ground and the wind is blowing. The faster the wind, the higher the wind chill factor will be. Watch your dog for shivering and get him inside and warm should he become too cold. Also, remember that the rock salt most cities use to keep the road clear of ice and snow can burn your dog's feet, so be sure to clean his feet after each walk.

Dogs love to go for walks. Not only for the exercise, but to spend time with you. Taking a few precautions will make walking with your four-legged friend more enjoyable for the both of you.
