Nuisance Barking What Can You Do

by Judy Finey

Barking is natural for your dog he communicates with you, and other dogs, it is only when the barking is excessive and annoying to everyone that you have a problem, to deal with the problem may involve some effort on you part and must involve dog and owner.

Firstly, find out if you have sufficient time and motivation to pursue a training program, if not I recommend that you find a professional trainer to assist you. If you decide to give it a try your self here is some helpful tips and suggestions.

Lets ask ourselves a few questions to assist us to develop a training plan.

When is the excessive barking occurring?

  • Is it when you leave the house?
  • When visitors arrive?
  • When your dog hears or observes some activity outside the home?
  • Attention seeking.
Make sure your dogs routine is such that he is not bored? Remember dogs can get bored and look for ways to get action and attention even if it is of the negative kind, harsh words to try to get him to stop barking.

Do you give your dog?

  • Sufficient exercise, variety of walking routes.
  • Quality time spent with you and members of the family, grooming, cuddling, ball games, family trips etc.
  • Does your dog have access to your home environment or is he restricted to a room or dog crate for several hours of the day.
  • Suitable toys play an important role in stimulating your dog, there are a large variety of toys to suit individual dogs. From rawhide chews, balls, rope toys, toys that you fill with treats and take time to retrieve.
  • By providing a stimulating environment such as listed above this will help to keep your dog busy, interested and more contented and quieter.

If you dog barks excessively when you leave him?

Start by leaving him for short times, just a few minutes, do not make a fuss when you go, leave him with a new toy, return promptly greet him as though there is nothing unusual to be left, if he is quiet give a treat. Slowly increase the length of time. Never give a treat if he barks. If you are leaving your dog alone for long periods consider doggy day care.

If he barks when visitors arrive

Remember he is just doing his job to warn you of intruders he will only know it is alright when you tell him, use a command such as its alright say firmly, and get him to sit beside you, when he does this give a treat and lots of praise. Keep you hand on his head, if he is a small dog pick him up, so you have physical contact. Once the barking is controlled you should not need to do this. Encourage visitors to greet and pat him, then send him to sit in his bed or designated place, this should be where he can see what is going on, when he does this give a treat and praise. Another approach is to remove the dog from the entrance room if he keeps barking, let him return when he is quiet, and reward.

If it is noise outside the home, that alerts your dog to bark?

Perhaps the mail man, try distracting your dog, ensure you have background noise on radio etc. Interest him with a large bone at the right time. Use the its alright command. Meeting other dogs when walking, spend time socializing your dog with other dogs, attend training classes, doggy day care, visit friends with dogs.

If you think he is just attention seeking?

Firstly give him more time and attention, but not when he is barking. Ignore the barking as much as you can. Every time he is in a situation and does not bark give a treat. Check his routine and ensure he is not bored.

For problem barking that you find difficult to cure using these suggestions there are training collars that may assist. Training collars should never be used for punishment and ensure you give your dog breaks from wearing the training collar.

Remember using treats for training is great for reinforcing the desired behavior, as the desired behavior is achieved cut down the treats, but always give praise and perhaps a toy occasionally. Most dogs want to please you, but you must be clear in your directions and commands, problems arise from poor communication, and misunderstanding of who is the leader. You always need to be established as the leader.
