Obedience Training Teaching Your Dog To Speak

Teaching your dog to speak does not give him permission to bark at every moving leaf or whenever he feels like it. Most excessive barking is due to boredom, anxiety, or may be breed specific (my collie does a lot of barking!). The ?speak? command can be used to cut back on the nonsense barking by allowing him to bark only when you say he can. If you?re worried about it increasing the barking, have no fear; it should have the opposite effect by putting the power in your hands.

?Speaking? should consist of a few short barks (two or three) and that?s it. If the command is going to be a trick, it needs to have a proper end point. To teach your dog to speak, you need to use triggers that reliably cause your dog to bark. A few examples are a ringing doorbell or offering a food treat.

Using food, tempt your dog with the treat but do not give it to him. Using a really hyper, singsong voice (more than usual), ask your dog to ?speak.? Your attitude and withholding the treat might get your dog excited enough to bark. Usually withholding the treat for long enough will make your dog impatient enough to bark. Your chipper-ness might make the process faster, though. If the dog barks, praise him and give him the treat. Practice until your dog can ?speak? when told to. Then slowly take away the food reward until he just uses the command.

If food isn?t going to do it, switch to the doorbell (or another noise your dog can?t help but bark at). Give the dog the ?speak? command the immediately rap on the door or ring the bell. Sometimes you as the trainer can do both ? give the command and ring the bell. Other times it requires another person to ring the bell after you?ve given the command. If the doorbell makes him bark, but also makes him run around the house in frenzied circles, put the dog on a leash to control his behavior. To keep his attention, once the dog has barked, give him praise and a treat.

Continue to practice this command repeatedly, be patient and persistent. Always be positive and eventually your dog will do as you wish. It just needs to click with your dog that ?speak? means bark a few times. This should give you more control and stop nonsense barking.
