What type of system you choose will depend largely on where you live and what type of routine is best to suit your needs. The first system is paper training. The idea behind paper training is to catch your puppy before he eliminated and then relocate him to the newspaper or puppy pads. The paper or pads would be by a door so that the puppy would get the idea that it needs to go outside to use the potty. Potty training a puppy this way consists of gradually moving the paper or pads outside until they understand they need to be outside to eliminate. Training has come a long way since the paper training and many people do not even use it anymore. This is also not very convenient for people who live in apartments. Crate training your puppy has become a very popular way to potty train. The puppy stays in his crate and is taken outside every hour to eliminate. This method also helps you to train your dog to eliminate on command. The crate represents the den that most wild dogs and wolves live in. They do not eliminate in the den and must go outside. Puppies do not like to eliminate in their environment and will learn to have bladder and bowel control by being in a crate. Gradually wean them from the crate, as they learn to potty on command in your yard. The crate also allows you to develop a potty training schedule with your puppy and you will know at exactly what times the puppy needs to be taken outside. This is a very useful potty training method for dog owners in apartments or large houses. Litter box training for dogs is a relatively new potty training method for small breeds. Small breed dogs are often the most difficult to potty train. Small dogs have small bladders and they may need to go more often. Many pet stores have also begun selling litter boxes specifically for dogs. For this method of potty training you will require a litter box, either one for a dog or the largest cat litter box you can find. You can line the litter box with newspaper or puppy pads. Puppy pads have a scent added to them to encourage the puppy to use them during potty training. There is also dog litter available, but cat litter will work as well. Keep a close eye on your dog and when you notice that they are acting as if they need to eliminate, direct them to their litter box. The idea is to keep them in an area so that they have no choice but to use the litter box. Praise your dog when he uses the litter box and tell him a command so that he associates eliminating with your command. This will come in handy when you take him outside or to the vet or groomer. This method can also be combined with crate training. With all the alternatives available for potty training your dog, you are sure to find one that will work. The key is to set up a schedule with the dog, insure that he understands the training and does not have any accidents.
