I always figured that commercial dog food isn't all that healthy for your dog. But I just found out what's really in a lot of commercial dog food. And I'm shocked! I'll tell you more about that later. I sat down and thought about what I would like to eat and what would be healthy for me if I were a dog. Then I felt silly, so I thought about my sister's dog, Muffin.Muffin is a beautiful pure bred mini- American Eskimo. She's the sweetest dog in the world and we love her and I could never think of hurting her. I didn't know it, but I have been hurting her! Being the sweetest dog in the world, and did I mention she's the prettiest dog in the world too(in our opinion anyway), she is also very spoiled by all of us who know and love her. And being spoiled, Muffin thinks she is a person, so she likes to eat "people food". She hardly touches dog food anymore. For several months now,I've been giving her left-overs almost every night. I haven't even been thinking if the food is okay for her to eat. I just assumed that if we ate it, it was okay for her to eat too. Well, I assumed wrong! Luckily, Muffin has a little common sense. For instance, I've given her leftover chili before, and she'll eat it but leave the tomatoes and beans. I just figured she doesn't like tomatoes and beans, but now I've learned they're not good for dogs. They're actually toxic to them! So now I've figured that if I think of Muffin as a little girl who has a lot of allergies, then I'll do better and pick out healthier and safer foods for her and still be able to give her suppers that she enjoys. (She loves my cooking!) Just keep in mind that for a dog to be healthy they need to eat 40% meat and 30% vegetables and 30% starch. Some of the foods that Muffin loves, and I'm sure your dog will too, are eggs(hard-boiled), salmon, tuna, sardines, and chipped beef. Experiment with different foods to see what your dog's tastes are. Some foods you should NOT feed to your dog are: Chocolate and caffeine: I know dogs love chocolate and pop but giving your dog caffeine can cause diarrhea, vomiting, hyperactivity, etc. Larger doses may even cause seizures, coma, or even death. Grapes and Raisins: I don't think anyone is quite sure why grapes and raisins can be toxic to your dog, but you should definitely avoid them. Some symptoms from toxicity are: vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and lethargy. Onions and Garlic: You would think these would be good for your dog(and good-tasting too), but they can cause vomiting, diarrhea, anemia, and liver damage. Some other foods to avoid feeding your dog are: Mushroooms, Macadamia nuts, baby food, fat trimmings, cocoa, milk, salt, raw eggs, sugary foods, almonds,apricots, unripe berries, potatoes, tomatoes, beans, broccoli, peaches, and avocados.To sum it all up, maybe you should do a little research of your own. Make a list of foods you think your dog may like, then do a little research on each food to make sure that they're healthy and safe. Initially, it may take a little time, but isn't your dog worth it?
